Bulgarian and Romanian ambassadors in Georgia, Vesselin Valkanov and Răzvan Rotundu, on Wednesday highlighted the importance of the Middle Corridor - a transportation route network connecting China with Europe through the South Caucasus region - and vowed support for the initiative.
The diplomats made the comments at the annual EU-Georgia Business Council-organised conference of the Black Sea Platform, which Valkanov said discussed “challenges and opportunities”.
I must point out there is progress on such an important issue as the Middle Corridor. It's good to sit down and talk with friends and stakeholders [...] We see opportunities, we know what challenges we have, we just have to solve them, although it is not easy”, he said.
The Ambassador also said Bulgaria had “always supported” Georgia, adding it would “make a big difference if the EU is more present in the region”.
We are very supportive [...] This will be another instance where we support Georgia. I hope there will be good news for Georgia”, he said.
In his turn, Rotundu said the importance of the Middle Corridor “grew more after the Russian aggression against Ukraine”.
Romania has been constantly supporting it as an alternative to the traditional transport routes. We think the potential is there and is higher, especially when Georgia completes the development of the Anaklia deep sea port, as well as the corridor between the Caucasus and Central Asia”, he noted.
The Conference discussed the importance of Georgia as a gateway for European and Central Asian countries, as well as future prospects for the country.
