The Georgian Ministry of Health will fully finance childbirth and caesarean sections within the Universal Healthcare Programme, the Ministry announced on Tuesday.

The change in this regard also implies covering fees for a doctor of a patient’s choice and anaesthesia, as well as medicines, food and other direct and indirect expenses.

In case of the caesarean section performed without indication, based on a patient's request, the services will not be financed by the state, the Ministry added.

The decision followed the extension of the financing of the diagnosis-related group system to the entire universal health programme, under which the prices of childbirth and caesarean section services have been equalised in all medical institutions.

The body said the reform aimed to ensure maximum access to high-quality medical services, reduce patient co-payments, increase the efficiency of the healthcare system, and effectively spend budget funds.
