Georgian Justice Minister Rati Bregadze on Friday told the Parliament that Georgia had won all 3,300 cases filed at the European Court of Human Rights related to the 2008 war and Russia’s intervention into the country.
Bregadze said all these victories were achieved by the ruling Georgian Dream party and stressed the protection of the country’s interests in international courts was one of the “most important” duties of his office.
On April 28, the ECHR ordered the Russian government to pay up to €130 million for the benefit of 24,000 Georgian citizens affected during the 2008 war between the two states, he noted.
The Minister also pointed out that the ECHR on April 20 had declared Georgia’s inter-state application on the ongoing occupation of the country’s territory by Russia, including the cases of the unlawful arrests and deaths of three Georgian citizens in the occupied territories - Archil Tatunashvili, Giga Otkhozoria and David Basharuli, as “fully admissible”.
He added his office would “struggle to the end” to legally protect the rights of every individual violated during Russia's 2008 aggression.
