“Successful reforms” implemented by the Georgian Government and the country’s progress on the European Union integration path were summarised on Tuesday in a meeting between the Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, Paweł Herczyński, the EU Ambassador to the country and ambassadors from EU member states.

Hosted on the initiative of the EU member state ambassadors, the meeting focused on the European Commission’s report that last week recommended the European Council to grant Georgia the EU membership candidate status, with the ambassadors congratulating Garibashvili on obtaining the status.

On his part, the PM highlighted the “historic significance” of the recommendation and extended his gratitude to the diplomatic corps for their support.

He said the ruling Georgian Dream party had managed to implement all recommendations outlined by the Council for granting its candidate membership status to the country with “united efforts” and “in a short period of time”, and confirmed his Government’s “readiness” to continue the “active process” of reforms.

He also expressed hope the country would receive the candidate status next month and emphasised the support from EU member states in the process. Garibashvili also noted the Georgian authorities would continue the “constant dialogue and close coordination” with their European colleagues.

The meeting also featured Ilia Darchiashvili, the Georgian Foreign Minister and Revaz Javelidze, the Head of the Government Administration.
