NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday said Russia’s plans to establish a permanent naval military base in the city of Ochamchire in Georgia’s Russian-occupied north-western region of Abkhazia violated the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.

In his remarks that follow reports on plans for the base for the Russian navy, Stoltenberg stressed the alliance “strongly supported” Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Of course, we don't accept that these breakaway territories can be used by Russia to establish military bases. This just once again violates the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and it demonstrates how far Russia is willing to go to achieve their military goals in Ukraine”, Stoltenberg said.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili early October called Russia’s plans a “continuation of the occupation”.
