Archil Talakvadze, the Georgian Parliament Vice Speaker, on Saturday said the country’s Government, with the support of Georgian society, was able to attain “irreversible progress” on the road to European integration.

In an interview with the Imedi TV channel, Talakvadze called the European Commission’s recommendation on November 8 - for the European Council to grant Georgia the European Union membership candidate status - “a historic moment”.

Today it can be said that [...] this [Georgia’s] progress has been properly seen and fairly evaluated. [...] We did everything so that Georgia could achieve this result”, he noted, adding the country was given “the green light” to receive the status.

Georgia is now more European, freer and economically stronger than it was ten years ago, Talakvadze emphasised and noted the reforms carried out by the ruling Georgian Dream party “have brought the opportunity” for the country to receive the EU candidate status, stressing Georgia would “achieve more” if it had “a responsible opposition”.
