The cooperation between the Georgian Defence Ministry and the European Union Monitoring Mission was discussed by Deputy Defence Minister Lela Chikovani and Dimitrios Karabalis, the EUMM Head in Georgia, the Ministry said on Sunday.
At the extended meeting, the representatives of the Ministry and the EUMM reviewed future plans, with Karabalis briefing the Georgian side on the activities of the mission and emphasising the importance of cooperation with the Defence Ministry.
In her turn, Chikovani also highlighted the important role of the EUMM as the only international monitoring mechanism in maintaining stability in Georgia.
EUMM Georgia was deployed in September 2008, following an EU-mediated ceasefire, which ended the war between Russia and Georgia in August of that year, to contribute to “stabilisation, normalisation and confidence-building between the conflict parties”.
The European Union Monitoring Mission Head Dimitrios Karabalis on Sunday said the EUMM remained dedicated to the mission of improving the lives and security of local communities in Georgia and pledged to stay in the country “as long as necessary”.
Georgian Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri and Dimitrios Karabalis, the newly appointed Head of the European Union Monitoring Mission in the country, on Wednesday reviewed security matters in Georgia’s occupied territories and prospects for deepening cooperation.
The humanitarian and human rights situation in the Russian-occupied regions of Georgia were discussed on Tuesday in a meeting between Tea Akhvlediani, the Georgian State Minister for Reconciliation and Civil Equality and Dimitrios Karabalis, the new Head of the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia.
The security situation near the Russian occupation line and in the Russian-occupied regions of Georgia, and release of Georgian citizens illegally detained by de facto authorities in the territories were discussed on Monday in a meeting between Grigol Liluashvili, the Head of the Georgian State Security Service and Dimitrios Karabalis, the Head of the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia.
