Maka Botchorishvili, the Chair of the European Integration Committee of the Georgian Parliament, on Tuesday claimed the presence of a “tireless campaign” by a part of the domestic opposition and “so-called civil activists” “against the European future of the country”.
Botchorishvili said the ruling Georgian Dream party had been “doing everything for more than a year” to fulfil the recommendations of the European Commission to receive the bloc’s membership candidate status.
We have seen tireless efforts and campaigns by [a part of the domestic] opposition and the so-called civil activists against the European future of Georgia for more than a year, including by lobbying [against the objective] through foreign actors”, Botchorishvili said.
“For more than a year, we have been talking about Georgia's European perspective and the expectation on the membership candidate status. The time for important decisions is approaching that should move Georgia a step forward on the path to joining the European Union”, she continued.
The Parliament official also said the number of complaints against the Georgian state in the European Court of Human Rights was decreasing, while the ECHR’s decisions pointing to fairness of justice in the country were increasing under the Georgian Dream Government.
