Georgian Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili on Monday called Hungary a “reliable” and “strong” partner for Georgia at an event dedicated to celebrate an anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian revolution.

Davitashvili extended his congratulations on the date, marking the day when university students in Budapest appealed to the public to protest against the Soviet Union’s geopolitical domination of their country, to Anna Maria Siko, the Hungarian Ambassador to Georgia, and citizens of the state.

In many ways, Georgia owes a large part of its progress to the constant and essential support that the Hungarian Government provided to Georgia in political, economic, educational, cultural and other fields”, Davitashvili said.

In his speech Davitashvili emphasised the “particularly intensive, active cooperation” between the two states, especially in trade and economy, adding despite the “positive dynamics” there was still a “great potential” for development in terms of investment cooperation.

In this context, I would like to highlight the agreement on promotion and protection of investments between the countries, which is in the final stage of preparation and will be signed in the near future. I am sure that the signing of the document will give an additional incentive to Hungarian businesses and investors to be interested in Georgian investment opportunities”, Davitashvili noted.

As an example of successful cooperation between the two countries, Davitashvili named the operations of Hungarian airline Wizz Air in western Georgia’s Kutaisi International Airport. Davitashvili said Wizz Air was going to station its fourth jet at the airport from December and add a new direction to Copenhagen, Denmark.

The Minister also highlighted the successful cooperation of the countries on the Black Sea submarine electricity cable project that aims to connect the South Caucasus energy grid to Europe.
