PM says Army City residential project completed, “similar” initiatives upcoming

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Monday said Army City, a project for offering accommodation to personnel of the Georgian Defence Forces in a newly built district on the outskirts of the capital city of Tbilisi, was “completed” and revealed a “similar” project would be launched “soon”. 

The Army City [project] is completed and today we will solemnly hand over these beautiful apartments to our dignified soldiers and their families. I am extremely happy and glad that another project we started has been completed [...] A similar project will be created very soon”, said Garibashvili.

The PM also recalled his former spell as the Minister of Defence and said his goal back then was to “offer the best” to the armed forces. 

We started to solve all the issues step by step. It included renovation of bases, purchase of equipment. One of the main projects was the implementation of the Army City project. I would like to thank the management of the construction company, the builders. You know that we have offered unprecedented conditions to our soldiers”, he said.

Servicemembers were offered the housing in the project on preferential terms, and with a 50 percent co-pay by the state, while also able to take advantage of interest-free internal payments instead of bank loans. The price per square metre for the flats that was offered tot hem was $200.

Garibashvili also made comments about the responsibilities of the state for recognising the service of military personnel and their dedication. 

The service of the military is priceless and all of us, the Government, the authorities are obliged to do our best for you, so that your service to our country, your dedication, your heroism is appreciated. Once again I bow before you, before your heroism. I want to thank your families, your spouses, your children. I want to wish you peace and victory once again”, Garibashvili said.

The Army City project was launched in 2020 on Mount Makhata and involved construction of 39 seven-storey apartment blocks with 1,092 flats to servicemembers and their families.
