Historical bridge in Gori reopens after rehabilitation

A historical bridge in the central Georgian city of Gori has reopened after an European Union-backed rehabilitation, with the 1908 construction now open for pedestrian access.
The completion of the restoration of the construction - the first iron-concrete bridge built in Georgia - was revealed by Gori City Hall on Thursday.

In its announcement, the city authorities noted the history of the bridge - a cultural heritage monument - and its historical status, stemming from its construction using what was considered innovative material mix in the early 20th century.
Known among locals as the Old Bridge, it was built over River Mtkvari to connect the Old Town of the city with its railway station settlement.

It is among infrastructure objects rehabilitated under the EU grant on Empowering Local Economic Opportunities for Sustainable Growth in the central Georgian municipality.
Professionals at the National Parliamentary Library of Georgia restored 42 “unique” historical maps, thousands of books and newspapers throughout 2022, Natalia Elizbarashvili, the Library’s Head of the Conservation and Restoration Department, said on Wednesday in her summary of the institution’s work.
Two recently renovated venues in Georgia, the Vani Archeological Museum in Georgia's west and Ilia Chavchavadze Literary Memorial Museum in capital Tbilisi, have been nominated for the 2023 European Museum of the Year Award by the European Museum Forum.
