Georgian police have arrested six individuals on charges of group violence against Irakli Edzgveradze, a member of the Tbilisi City Council and the United National Movement opposition party, and the persons accompanying him, the Interior Ministry said on Saturday.

The Ministry earlier today said it was investigating an alleged assault on Edzgveradze, after the latter said he had been attacked in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi and had been “physically assaulted by more than 30 people”.

As the investigation established, the detainees on Friday had physically assaulted Edzgverdze and the persons accompanying him.

The crime is punishable by up to two years in prison.

The state body also said that the UNM party members and Edzgveradze’s friends had prevented the police from performing their duties, they had verbally and physically insulted the law enforcement officers, and three individuals were arrested on Administrative offences.

As a result of the confrontation, several police officers have been injured, the Ministry said, noting that administrative proceedings had been launched against other individuals who obstructed police work.
