Georgia’s National Intellectual Property Centre on Tuesday said it was launching a public information campaign to raise awareness about geographical indications and appellations of place of origin in the country.

The body, also known as Sakpatenti, cited a lack of awareness on products that bore names related to domestic geographic locations and said it would release social media posts explaining their significance.

It cited Borjomi mineral water, Khvanchkara wine variety, tushuri guda cheese and others originating in specific locations across the country and said various regions had “great potential” of producing such products.

In highlighting the importance of the produce, the Centre said geographical indications and designations of origin with special features were “competitive products” that were preferred by consumers and priced above their conventional counterparts.

It also said the pieces of intellectual property aided in the development of local businesses, promotion of regional brands, and growth of agrotourism with involvement of local communities.
