Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Monday highlighted the “important role” of the institute of the country’s Honorary Consuls for developing trade, economic and cultural cooperation with partner countries, attracting investments and encouraging tourism.
In his speech at the Conference of Honorary Consuls in Georgia's Black Sea resort city of Batumi, Darchiashvili noted the contribution of the diplomats to the promotion of the country at the international level.
I would like to emphasise the importance of the institute of Honorary Consuls for Georgia and the efforts directed to the implementation of the interests of my country in different parts of the world. It is very important for Georgia to promote its economic and political agenda with strong international support”, Darchiashvili said.
“You make an important contribution to the development of Georgia by raising awareness about it, as well as by deepening economic and cultural cooperation with different countries and protecting the rights of our citizens”, he told the conference.
The top Georgian diplomat focused on last year’s “historic” decision by the European Council to recognise the European perspective for Georgia, which he said had formally paved the way for the country to become a member of the European Union.
Darchiashvili also noted the importance of the country’s strategic location and emphasised its “important role” as a regional hub in the implementation of large transport and transit and energy projects in the South Caucasus region.
The first Conference of Honorary Consuls was held in 2022 and marked the service of the diplomats, 90 of which represent the country in 65 countries. This year, the network of Honorary Consuls of Georgia expanded with appointments to countries including Croatia, Poland and the United States.
