Seven individuals have been detained in western Georgia's Samegrelo region for tax avoidance using forged documents and causing a loss of ₾214,730 ($81,498) to the state budget, the Investigation Service of Georgia’s Finance Ministry said on Friday.

The Service said its investigation had found the offenders had produced fake documents on behalf of companies under their management, indicating supply of construction work services and repair materials.

They then used VAT assets created through the documentation to cover their existing tax liabilities.

The body also said the loss of funds for the budget was “fully reimbursed” at the investigation stage for the case, while the offenders face four to seven years in prison.
