Orthodox Christians in Georgia are on Monday celebrating Mariamoba, the Day of Virgin Mary.

The holiday commemorates the dormition of the mother of Jesus Christ and, as believed, her bodily resurrection before being taken up into heaven.

The holiday is commemorated by one of the great feasts of the Orthodox Church. The feast is preceded by a two-week fast, known in Georgia as the Dormition Fast, which is observed  prior to the holiday.

The Mother of God is considered the principal protector and intercessor of Georgia as the country was first allocated to her to preach in. It is believed that her holy robe is placed in the Saint Mary's Church in western Georgia’s Samegrelo region.

The majority of Georgia’s population is Orthodox Christian, with the day marked as a public holiday in the country.
