Catherine Colonna, the French Foreign Minister, on Tuesday said her country’s Government was reaffirming its “attachment” to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders, in remarks for the 15th anniversary of the 2008 invasion of Georgia by Russia and the war between the two states.

Colonna noted the unilateral recognition of the self-proclaimed authorities of the Abkhazia and South Ossetia (Tskhinvali) regions, “militarisation” of the regions and “obstacles” placed in the relations between them and the rest of Georgia constituted “unacceptable” violations of the international law.

The top French diplomat called on Russia to “fully implement” the commitments it had taken up under the 2008 ceasefire agreement, and reaffirmed her support for the Geneva International Discussions - a platform facilitating talks between the Georgian Government and de facto authorities in the occupied regions.

She also added France “fully” supported the work of the European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia, as well as the European Union Monitoring Mission in the country.
