The United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday said his country’s Government “strongly” supported Georgia's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and Euro-Atlantic aspirations, in remarks over the 15th anniversary of the 2008 invasion of Georgia by Russia and the war between the two countries.
In comment, Blinken noted Russia was still refusing to abide by the EU-brokered ceasefire commitments which, among other clauses, required Moscow to withdraw its troops to pre-conflict positions in Georgia.
“Today marks fifteen years since Russia invaded Georgia and occupied 20 percent of its land. Russia still refuses to abide by its 2008 ceasefire commitments. The United States strongly supports Georgia's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and Euro-Atlantic aspirations”, Blinken said in a social media message.

Earlier today the Georgian foreign office highlighted a “serious threat to the security architecture” of the wider region and Europe, posed by Russia’s 2008 invasion.
