In 2022, 18 percent less deaths were recorded in Georgia, with the number standing at 49,118, the latest data published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia shows.
The largest number was recorded in the capital city of Tbilisi with 14,123, while the smallest came on Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti, with 715.
Of this number of deaths 35.9 percent were caused by diseases of the circulatory system and 9.2 percent - by neoplasms, which were the dominant causes of death in 2022.
Geostat said that causes of death varied with age.
Certain disorders originating in the perinatal period are dominant among children under five. At the age of 5-39, injury, poisoning and certain other consequences of external causes prevail, as the risk of accidents is relatively higher for these age groups. At the age of 40 and above, the dominant causes of death are diseases of the circulatory system and neoplasms”, the body said.
The other data shows that 42,319 children were born throughout the past year across Georgia, with 21,897 boys and 20,422 girls. The number of births decreased 7.9 percent year-on-year.
The highest number was recorded in Tbilisi with 14,202, while the lowest was in the north-western Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti regions, with 246.
The share of births for women aged below 25 declined from 27.2 percent to 26.5 percent and increased for women aged 40 and older - from 3.6 percent to 4 percent - and those aged between 25-39 - from 69.2 percent to 69.6 percent.
Infant mortality rate per 1,000 births equalled 7.6 percent, while the mortality rate for children under five totalled 9.2 percent.
