International Seafarers Day marked in Black Sea city of Batumi

Georgia’s Black Sea city of Batumi on Saturday marked the annual International Day of the Seafarer with sailors and students of Batumi State Maritime Academy marching from the city’s seaside boulevard strip to its port on the backdrop of a brass band performance to celebrate the date.

The celebrations will continue throughout the day in Batumi with various events, including a ceremony awarding the sailors for their special contribution to the development of the maritime industry, the Economy Ministry said.

They were addressed by officials of the regional and central Government, with Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili thanking the sailors for their loyalty to the country and honourable service and highlighting the importance of maritime education in Georgia.

The development of maritime transport is very important for our country, Georgia is a maritime country and in this direction it will further establish its place in the international community”, Davitashvili noted and emphasised the Government’s “consistent and purposeful policy”, making Georgia a “worthy member” of the international maritime community.

He said the Government’s policy aimed to develop infrastructure and implement “ambitious projects”, including the construction of the deep sea port in Georgia's Black Sea town of Anaklia, which would “further strengthen” the role of Georgia as a maritime country on the Black Sea.

As part of the Day of the Seafarer, the Economy Minister also attended the opening of a new, international standard simulation space at the Batumi State Maritime Academy, which will give students of the University an opportunity to undergo practical training.
