Tbilisi City Hall to annul contract with sanctioned Russian company

Tbilisi City Hall has started the procedure of terminating the contract with Metrowagonmash, the Russian engineering company, sanctioned by the international community following the country’s invasion of Ukraine, the City Hall announced on Friday.
The state body explained it had signed the contract with Metrowagonmash in November 2021, as the winning company of the tender, organised and financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for the purchase of 40 new carriages for the Tbilisi Metro station.
The Russian company was sanctioned by the international community on May 19, 2023, the City Hall said, adding as “Georgia has been implementing international financial sanctions against Russia”, the body would not cooperate with the sanctioned company.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Friday pledged “not a single" airline or aircraft sanctioned for Russia's invasion of Ukraine would be allowed to operate in Georgia following the resumption of direct flights between the countries this week.
The United States Department of State’s Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation on Friday “applauded” the “diligent” work of Georgia to support international financial sanctions and export controls with the support of the US Embassy in the country.
Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili, on Wednesday, said Georgia remained committed to its policy regarding international sanctions against Russia, imposed on the country for its invasion of Ukraine and would continue “close cooperation” with its partners after the Russian Government lifted its ban on flights with Georgia and visa requirements for citizens of the country.
Georgian Defence Minister Juansher Burchuladze on Sunday said the accusations “made so far” on circumvention of sanctions, imposed by the international community against Russia due to its invasion of Ukraine, were all “absurd, disproved” and needed justification.
Georgian Police arrested 16 individuals for administrative offences during a protest outside Kvareli Lake Resort in Georgia's east, the local media outlet Interpressnews said on Saturday.
