Giorgi Pertaia, the President of the Georgian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has been elected as a member of the General Council of the World Chambers Federation, the national body announced on Wednesday.

Pertaia was elected to the Council in a vote on Tuesday that involved votes from 1,400 national chambers from 130 countries and chose 20 members, including 13 women, that would join the structure.

The Georgian representative’s election makes the Georgian Chamber of Commerce the only such body from the South Caucasus to be represented in the General Council.

Commenting on the new members, WCF Chairman Nicolás Uribe said the election had "successfully brought together" one of the most "diverse and inclusive" councils in the history of the Federation.

I look forward to working with all members to strengthen the WCF and the wider chamber community, with the overarching objective of elevating and empowering businesses worldwide to be leading players in tackling our most pressing issues", he said.

Each of the newly elected members will serve a three-year term in the Council, with the opportunity to run twice for the position.
