Georgian citizen Giorgi Megrelishvili, who was illegally detained on Sunday by de facto authorities of Georgia's Russian-occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region, has been released, the Georgian State Security Service said on Monday.

Megrelishvili was detained from territory adjacent to the village of Nikozi in the central Gori Municipality, in the latest incident along the administrative line marking the occupied region out from the rest of the country.

His release was ensured following the Government’s “active use” of the hotline designated for developments along the line and “all other tools available”, the agency said.

The Service also said the Government and its international partners continued to “work actively” to ensure release of all Georgian citizens illegally detained by Russian-controlled authorities in Tskhinvali and the occupied north-western Abkhazia region.
