Georgian Deputy Economy Minister Romeo Mikautadze on Wednesday told the World Utilities Congress in Abu Dhabi the goal of the Georgian Government was to ensure energy security of the country.
The Ministry of Economy said Mikautadze participated in a ministerial session entitled Accelerating Global Action on Clean Energy and Energy Security, where he said providing the population and the business sector in Georgia with “safe, clean and affordable” energy was “one of the main prerequisites” for the country's development.
He also told the event “active work” was underway for introducing new technology, including the development of green hydrogen production, in parallel with traditional renewables.
The Deputy Minister highlighted the importance of energy efficiency, saying implementation of measures such as improvements in insulation of buildings, upgrades to lighting infrastructure and energy-efficient appliances could help reduce overall energy demand.
Mikautadze also noted the role of Government incentives for the private sector to invest more in clean energy production.
The Ministry said the project of the Black Sea submarine electricity cable - envisioned to connect the South Caucasus grid with those of European Union countries and enable export of energy to the latter - had drawn a “particular interest” at the Congress after Mikautadze detailed it to the audience.
