One arrested, charged with assaulting wife in Tbilisi

The Georgian Prosecutor General’s Office on Thursday said it had filed charges against an individual for an assault on his wife in Tbilisi last week.
The body said the suspect was arrested this week, with the Office having already asked the court for preventive detention.
The arrest comes after the alleged victim last week posted a photo of herself with what appeared to be facial injuries on social media, claiming she had been subjected to violence by her husband for years.
In its comments, the Office said its investigation had revealed the injuries had been caused by an assault following a verbal altercation between the two.
The suspect does not admit to the crime and claims to unveil details.
Tbilisi City Court has sentenced four individuals to five years and six months in prison for psychological and physical abuse of Khanum Jeiranova, a woman found dead in 2014 in eastern Georgia’s Sagarejo municipality, the Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia announced on Tuesday.
The Georgian government on Friday said it had joined the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, the event marked worldwide since 1991 to raise awareness over the problem.
The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia launched criminal prosecution against 5,144 individuals throughout the country for domestic violence and violence against women throughout 2021, the state body said on Monday.
4,633 individuals were charged for domestic violence and crimes throughout Georgia in 2020, which is 5.4 per cent more compared to the previous year, Chief Prosecutor Irakli Shotadze said while presenting his body’s annual report today.
