Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Saturday attended the civil funeral of Jamlet Khukhashvili, a longtime sports commentator and journalist of the Georgian media scene, and expressed his condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
Garibashvili praised Khukhashvili as a “legendary person, who has served his country and his work with immense love and dedication for many decades”, and stressed he had served the development and popularisation of Georgian sports, including discovering “many talented young athletes” for the country.
He [Jamlet Khukhashvili] gave us the right example by his activities. He always had the right state and civil position”, the Head of the Government said, highlighting his “tireless” work to further strengthen the “brotherhood and friendship” between Georgian and Jewish people.
Along with the PM, Sports Minister Thea Tsulukiani, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, as well as representatives of the Government, offered their condolences to Khukhashvili's family.
Khukhashvili was a sports commentator since 1963 and chaired the World Jewish Congress of Georgia. He, an honorary citizen of Georgia’s capital Tbilisi, was also awarded the Order of Honor for his personal contribution to Georgian sports, as well as for strengthening of Georgian-Jewish relations.
