Kakha Kaladze, the Mayor of Tbilisi and the Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Saturday said it was “wrong” to think that “something” could be “achieved” in Georgia by confrontation, revolution and overthrowing the Government.

If the country does not receive the European Union membership candidate status in December, the domestic radical opposition will use it to fuel a conflict and change the Government, Kaladze stressed, adding the EU’s decision not to grant Georgia the status last June was “disappointing”, as the country “really deserved” it.

Ruling party Sec Gen said one of the opposition leaders Zurab Girchi Japaridze did not hide his “intentions” to provoke “confrontation and disturbance” in the country and added “such actions” would always be followed by “a strict response” from the state and relevant agencies. “Peace will be maintained” in Georgia for the economic development of the country, Kaladze added.

The freedom of speech, expression and assembly is protected in this country [Georgia] and all political parties, persons have the right to express their opinions, [...] but all these should be within the scope of the law”, the Georgian official emphasised.
