Activities of the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia and the current developments in the wider region were discussed on Monday in a meeting between the Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili and Dimitrios Karabalis, the newly appointed EUMM Head in Georgia.

Papuashvili congratulated the Greek diplomat on his appointment and expressed the commitment of the Georgian Parliament to “closely” cooperate with the Mission, the legislative body’s press office said.

The officials highlighted the importance of the Mission as the only international representation along the administrative boundary line marking the Russian occupation of two regions of the country, and its role as an “impartial source” of information in the locations.

The meeting also noted the Mission was deprived of the capacity to “fully realise” its mandate and get access to the Russian-occupied regions due to the Russian opposition.

Karabalis thanked Papuashvili for supporting the Mission and stressed by extending the mandate in December, the EU had continued to “contribute to regional stability”.
