Georgian judokas claimed six medals, including three gold, two silver and one bronze medals at the Judo Grand Slam Tbilisi 2023 hosted in Georgia’s capital, the Sports Ministry said on Sunday.
The reigning Olympic champion Lasha Bekauri and the 21-year-old judoka Ilia Sulamanidze won the tournament, with Bekauri defeating another Georgian judoka, the reigning European champion Luka Maisuradze, who claimed the silver medal in the -90 kg category, and Sulamanidze winning over Mongolian rival Gonchigsuren Batkhuyag in the -100 kg category of the tournament.
The Georgian team member Gela Zaalishvili also claimed the gold, defeating Turkish Munir Ertug in the final.
At the beginning of the tournament, the 19-year-old Giorgi Sardalashvili claimed a silver medal and the Olympic, World and European champion Lasha Shavdatuashvili won bronze in their respective weight categories.
Georgian judoka Varlam Liparteliani claimed gold at the 2023 Tashkent Grand Slam on Sunday, earning the top step of the podium in the -100 kg weight category of the tournament.
Georgian wrestler Ilia Sulamanidze claimed a gold medal at the Judo Grand Prix in Portugal on Sunday. Sulamanidze defeated his Japanese rival Arai Dota, throwing the competitor twice with waza-ari in the -100 kg category final.
