Georgian judo team win six medals at Grand Slam Tbilisi

Georgian judokas claimed six medals, including three gold, two silver and one bronze medals at the Judo Grand Slam Tbilisi 2023 hosted in Georgia’s capital, the Sports Ministry said on Sunday.

The reigning Olympic champion Lasha Bekauri and the 21-year-old judoka Ilia Sulamanidze won the tournament, with Bekauri defeating another Georgian judoka, the reigning European champion Luka Maisuradze, who claimed the silver medal in the -90 kg category, and Sulamanidze winning over Mongolian rival Gonchigsuren Batkhuyag in the -100 kg category of the tournament.

The Georgian team member Gela Zaalishvili also claimed the gold, defeating Turkish Munir Ertug in the final.

At the beginning of the tournament, the 19-year-old Giorgi Sardalashvili claimed a silver medal and the Olympic, World and European champion Lasha Shavdatuashvili won bronze in their respective weight categories.
