A state programme will replace damaged buildings with modern residential complexes in Georgia’s Black Sea coast city of Batumi, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili announced on Monday.

The Government head revealed the initiative, entitled Batumi Without Damaged Houses, noting Tornike Rizhvadze, the Head of the Adjara Regional Government, had prepared a “very interesting” programme for the replacement of the buildings.

Garibashvili called the issue of damaged buildings in Batumi “very acute,” saying it posed a threat to citizens and adding the Government would approve the programme for their replacement at today’s session.

The Government’s move comes after an incident in the seaside city in October last year, where nine people died following the collapse of a seven-storey residential block.

The announcement comes at today’s Government session, where nine projects will be presented and discussed by ministers.
