Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Saturday said the country was becoming “one of the crucial” states in production of green and renewable energy.

In comments to the media following the signing of a deal on strategic green energy development partnership between Georgia, Azerbaijan, Romania and Hungary in Bucharest earlier today, Darchiashvili called the agreement "very important", stressing Georgia would play an "active and important" role in the project.

The FM highlighted both the fact of two European Union member states becoming signatories of the agreement, and the presence of Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission President, at the signing as “particularly important”.

The project will bring Georgia "even closer" to the EU and give the country a “greater chance” to play the role of a "regional leader", he added, noting the development would benefit his Government’s "main foreign policy priority" of EU integration.
