The involvement of women in economic activities, especially in the field of information technology, is one of the priorities of the Economy Ministry, Irakli Nadareishvili, the Deputy Economy Minister said on Tuesday at the official launch of the new partnership between the United States Agency for International Development and the Business Technology University.

In his address, Nadareishvili said the Ministry “actively supported” this direction in all of its programmes and activities, both in terms of supporting business and entrepreneurship, as well as innovation and IT ecosystem development,  and noted the partnership, within which Georgian women would be enrolled in IT training programmes, would be “another important contribution” to it, the Economy Ministry said.

We are investing in Georgia’s future economic growth and prosperity. Adding to Georgia’s ICT workforce with more talented, creative, and highly skilled workers means opportunities for Georgia’s businesses to increase their revenue. It also increases integration with international markets, including those in the EU and US”, John Pennell, USAID Mission Director noted.

Through the joint investment of USAID and BTU in Georgia’s women and their future as “highly paid workers” in information and communications technology, 1,500 women across six regions of Georgia will be enrolled in skills training programmes that align with needs requested by Georgia’s ICT companies.

According to the agreement, rural training spaces will be established in the areas along the administrative boundary lines and communities with sizable ethnic minority populations. These include eastern, central and western Georgia’s Telavi, Gori, Akhaltsikhe, Ozurgeti, Zugdidi, Tsalenjikha, Tkibuli and Ambrolauri.

Additionally, the partnership seeks to raise awareness and encourage employment opportunities for graduates of various ICT programmes in the country through long-term partnerships with 12 businesses.
