The investigation service of the ministry of finance of Georgia has charged two business entities and their accountants with fraudulent appropriation of funds designated for citizens on maternity leave, the state body said on Wednesday.

The service said the individuals running the businesses had fictitiously registered pregnant women unrelated to the entities to appear as their employees and be eligible for the funds.

The fraudulent registrations were used to mislead the social service agency into releasing one-time supplements in the combined amount of ₾82,000 (about $30,254), designated as state funds for women on maternity leave, to 82 individuals at the businesses.

An investigation is underway to identify all members of the criminal group, the service also said.

The crime is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
