Georgian deputy economy minister Romeo Mikautadze on Tuesday spoke about the importance of the development of green hydrogen in Georgia at an international forum organised by the  International Energy Agency, the ministry of economy said.

Mikautadze told the forum the development of the technology would balance the country’s energy system and contribute to energy security and create new business opportunities.

Although we do not currently have a strategy or action plan that directly addresses hydrogen issues, we have already taken practical steps in this direction”, he said, highlighting the 2021 agreement between his government and the German KfW Development Bank for promoting the development of green hydrogen in Georgia.

Also called renewable hydrogen, green hydrogen is obtained by electrolysis of water, with the process powered entirely by renewable energy and leading to no polluting emissions into the atmosphere and is the cleanest and most sustainable hydrogen.

Georgia’s economy ministry said development of domestic resources and facilitation of transit function were believed to provide economic, political and security boost given the country’s renewable energy potential and favourable geographical location.
