EU ambassador: EU commissioner’s “very clear” message to everyone - national consensus needed on EU conditions

Herczynski said during the discussions held within the framework of the Economic and Investment Plan, the main emphasis had been placed on projects in the fields of interconnection and energy, while noting the implementation had to be speeded up and expressing hope that there would be “concrete results soon”, which would benefit both Georgia and the EU. Pawel Herczynski, the European Union’s ambassador to Georgia on Thursday said the EU commissioner for neighbourhood and enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, during his official visit to the country, had had a “very clear” message to everyone in regard to the need for national consensus for implementing the conditions outlined by the EU for granting Georgia the membership candidate status.

As Herczynski explained, the consensus implied “inclusiveness” to be ensured by the government and “constructive involvement” of the opposition parties and stressed the importance of cooperation between all parties “to take the next steps” on the EU integration path.

The EU ambassador evaluated Varhelyi’s visit as a “very good” visit and said the discussions focused on the 12-point conditions and the Economic and Investment Plan.

The EU commissioner Varhelyi came to Georgia for the first time as a commissioner who is responsible not only for neighbourhood policy, but also for enlargement issues. After the EU leaders gave Georgia a European perspective this summer, the door to the EU has opened and now the country must prove that it is ready to take the next steps”, Herczynski noted.
