Georgia is supporting Ukraine, the country’s sovereignty and independence “as much as possible” and “at all levels”, prime minister Irakli Garibashvili said on Tuesday in a press conference in Tbilisi with Oliver Varhelyi, the European Union commissioner for neighbourhood and enlargement.
Garibashvili highlighted Georgia had itself experienced war “on a different scale” in August 2008, adding a “big challenge” of the legacy of the conflict remained since the war in the form of the ongoing occupation of two of the country’s regions by Russia.
The PM added it was “in the national interest” of Georgia to enjoy a “period of peace, stability and development”, and highlighted the “reasonable” foreign policy of his government for the purpose.

“We understand very well what reality we have to live in today - it is the occupation - […] [o]ur main task and goal is de-occupation of our country in a peaceful way and [its] [re]integration”, Garibashvili noted and pointed out Georgia’s future was in the European Union.
