A delegation of the Georgian parliament, led by the speaker Shalva Papuashvili, on Monday started its working visit to Tokyo to meet Japanese counterparts and review cooperation between the institutions of the two countries.

Within the framework of the visit, meetings will be held with the heads of the House of Representatives and the lower house of the Japanese parliament, the press office of the parliament said.

In his comments over the visit, Mamuka Mdinaradze, the executive secretary of the ruling Georgian Dream party, said the visit served to “deepen the inter-parliamentary cooperation”.

One of the main issues will be the support for the policy of deoccupation [of the Russian-occupied Georgian regions], which has been supported by the Japanese counterparts for years, although it is important to increase efforts in this regard”, the GD official said.

Mdinaradze noted the visit would also review economic relations, tourism, sport, as well as the cooperation in the field of education.

Of course, we will [also] talk about the current geopolitical situation in the region and the challenges that our region - including our country - faces”, he concluded in his comments.
