Russian occupation forces have illegally detained a Georgian citizen in the village of Bershueti in central Georgia’s Gori municipality, near the occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region, the Georgian state security service confirmed on Wednesday.

Relatives of the individual told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty the man had been detained while on his way home from a local villager’s house, and called his family members from Tskhinvali prison to inform them of his arrest.

The state body said it had activated the hotline operated for information exchange on developments along the occupation line, and informed the European Union monitoring mission and co-chairs of the Geneva international discussions about the incident.

The SSS also noted work was underway with international partners for releasing other Georgian citizens illegally detained by the occupation forces.
