Georgia’s public security management centre and the United Nations population fund on Wednesday signed an agreement on joint efforts to prevent early marriages and ensuring information campaigns over the societal problem, the country’s interior ministry said.

Signed by Giorgi Arsoshvili, the head of the management centre, and Hassan Mohtashami, the director of the UNFPA in Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan, the deal involves use of an application used by the centre to inform target audiences about measures being taken against early marriages and related services in Georgia.

The officials said the initiative and information campaigns would be implemented under UN's gender equality programme, which is funded by the Swedish government.

Arsoshvili named the prevention of early marriages as one of the priorities of the ministry, stressing the elimination of the issue would contribute to the health and well-being of the young generation and gender equality in the country.
