Pawel Herczynski, the European Union ambassador to Georgia, on Friday said the bloc condemned the visit of the president of Belarus to Georgia’s Russian-occupied region of Abkhazia this week and added Aleksandr Lukashenko was “not a legitimate president” of his country.

In his remarks over the visit, Herczynski noted the EU “stood firmly” in supporting Georgia’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.

We have condemned this visit of the so-called President, because Lukashenko is not a legitimate president of Belarus, to the breakaway region of Abkhazia. And simply, we feel this is unacceptable to have such a visit”, he concluded in his comments.

Peter Stano, the spokesperson for the external affairs of the European Union, on Thursday said the bloc condemned “very strongly” the visit of Belarusian president to Abkhazia.

The EU official stressed the move was a violation of Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and constituted a “blatant violation” of international law.
