Georgian Railway is simplifying freight procedures by moving paperwork required for international freight online.
Starting September 27, cargo owners will be able to receive and fill out not only the documents required for local shipments, but also international railway freight traffic papers online, the company announced on Thursday.
Documents required for local freight have been available for Georgian Railway customers since 2017, while the new system will enable cargo companies to receive bills and freight orders on the website cargo.railway.ge.
Customers will be able to electronically submit their completed paperwork to the company, and sign and track the status of their documents online.
The cargo of Uzbekistan has “almost” doubled in the transport corridor of Georgia, the Georgian deputy economy minister Guram Guramishvili said on Thursday at a meeting with the delegation of Uzbekistan, which included heads of public and private organisations of the transport-logistics sector.
Odile Renaud-Basso, the president of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, has pledged the institution’s support for the Georgian government to turn the country into a logistics hub by strengthening intra-regional connections amid increased demands on alternative routes connecting Europe with Asia on the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
An agreement on preliminary data exchange to simplify customs transit procedures between Georgian, Turkish and Azerbaijani Governments was signed on Thursday in a tripartite meeting by Levan Kakava, the Head of Georgian Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance, Riza Turagay, the Deputy Minister of Trade of Türkiye and Shakhin Bagirov, the Acting Head of the State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan, in Azerbaijan's capital of Baku.
Georgian Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili on Saturday said cargo turnover, by the country's transport sectors, including road and railway, as well as civil aviation, had increased by 16.6 percent in the first quarter of 2022 and had amounted to 12.8 million tons, this “clearly indicating” that the interest of international carriers towards the transport corridor of Georgia has been growing.
Cargo turnover by Georgia's transport sectors, including road transport, railway freight and air cargo, increased by 2.4 percent in the first quarter of 2023 and amounted to 9.5 million tonnes, the Ministry of Economy announced on Thursday.
