New school year opens with changes to curriculum, fresh venues

Over 632,000 school students walked into classrooms to begin their studies in the new school year across Georgia, with changes to their curriculum and new school venues unveiled for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Students will be taught the history of Georgia as an independent subject in a departure from the previous combined approach, while chess becomes a new subject, to be taught from the first grade.

Marking the start of the new school year, education minister Mikheil Chkhenkeli visited public school No. 86 in Tbilisi, a newly constructed venue designed for up to 650 students, and said the role of educated generations as “a solid foundation for Georgia’s progress and development”. He also stressed the role of teachers in raising the new generations.

At the initiative of the country’s prime minister Irakli Garibashvili, the government has started construction and renovation of 800 schools throughout the country. Chkhenkeli said the initiative would provide equal access to educational resources, with up to 230,000 students benefiting from the venues that will also be adapted for special educational needs.
