Georgian theatre and cinema professionals were joined by officials in homages to late actor Mikheil Gomiashvili, who has passed away at the age of 61.

Marjanishvili Theatre revealed the news on the actor's death earlier today, with the country's culture sector and politicians sending in tributes to the popular stage and film artist.

Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili called Gomiashvili's passing away a "grave loss" for the late actor's family, friends and colleagues. He added Gomiashvili had enjoyed "love and recognition by viewers" throughout his career.

Family and friends of the actor said he had died following cardiac complications and had been undergoing treatment in a clinic before his passing away.

Joining Marjanishvil Theatre - one of the major domestic stage art venues - in 1994, Gomiashvili featured in contemporary theatre and cinema productions in the decades since.

He earned the Grand Prix of the International 'Golden Mask' Theatre Competition for his part in two theatre productions.
