Georgian Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri on Wednesday extended his condolences to the families of the victims of a massive explosion that shook Yerevan on Sunday.

In a letter sent to the Chief of the Armenian Police on behalf of the Georgian Interior Ministry, Gomelauri expressed support to his Armenian counterpart and wished the injured citizens a “speedy recovery”.

On behalf of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, I would like to express my deep sorrow over the heavy explosion that occurred in the Surmalu shopping centre in Yerevan. Let me address you and the Armenian people at this time of sorrow to express my deepest respect and support. I would like to express my condolences to the families of those who died as a result of the tragedy and to wish the affected citizens a speedy recovery”, the letter said.

The Armenian National Crisis Management Centre received a report on Sunday about an explosion at the Surmalu shopping centre in Yerevan. 

Preliminary data said the blast was followed by a fire, with the number of injured exceeding 60, and 16 people dying as a result of the powerful explosion.
