Two individuals have been charged with degrading treatment of Khanum Jeiranova, a woman found dead in 2014 in eastern Georgia’s Sagarejo municipality following severe psychological and physical abuse from her husband’s relatives, the Prosecution Service of Georgia announced on Monday.

The state body said the offenders, identified only through their initials, had put Jeiranova in “degrading circumstances on the basis of her gender” and humiliated her in front of locals in a village of the municipality on September 18 of that year.

The statement also said two days prior to her death she had been dragged out of a car by force and verbally and physically assaulted, before the assailants also restricted her freedom.

The state body said it treated the case as gender-based discrimination, noting “[i]n the presence of the villagers, [Jeiranova] was referred to in derogatory terms, claiming she should be punished for behavior inappropriate for a woman”.

Three other individuals involved in the case were also charged with illegal deprivation of freedom and degrading  treatment of Jeiranova on April 27.
