Mamuka Mdinaradze, the Executive Secretary of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Monday called on Elene Khoshtaria, the leader of the Droa opposition party, to disclose information about the money received by her from Russia and transfer the funds to help Ukraine amid the Russian invasion.

Mdinaradze was commenting on an Imedi TV report released on Thursday, which said Khoshtaria had received transfers of “substantial funds” from Russia in phases, involving “several million rubles and tens of thousands of dollars”.

We [the ruling party] call on Elene Khoshtaria to disclose complete information on each ruble received from Russia since August 2008, and it would be very good if she transferred these funds to the Ukraine aid foundation”, the GD official said in reference to the month of the Russia-Georgia war 14 years ago.

In reference to the leader of the opposition party, Mdinaradze said a politician who “had been asserting to the public for years that everything Russian was categorically unacceptable” had “no moral right” to use Russian funds for personal or family welfare, or political purposes.

If Khoshtaria and her family refuse to disclose the money transferred from Russia, it will become indisputable that we are dealing with a case that should be investigated by the relevant bodies so that the Georgian state can guard itself against the influence of the Russian soft power”, he concluded in his comments.

Khoshtaria on Thursday confirmed transfers of funds from Russia to the account of her family member after reports in Georgian media, and said the money involved royalties for her father from a Russian theatre.

The opposition figure said her father was the successor of Soliko Virsaladze, a famed Georgian scenographer who produced set and costume designs in theatres, including venues based in Russia.

The Droa leader said the funds were royalties for Virsaladze’s work, “accrued and transferred over the past 25 years from all the [productions involving] him [in Russia]”.
