Elene Khoshtaria, the leader of the Droa opposition party, on Thursday confirmed transfers of funds from Russia to the account of her family member after reports in Georgian media, and said the money involved royalties for her father from a Russian theatre.

The comment came after Imedi TV on Thursday reported transfers of “substantial funds” originating in Russia in phases and involving “several million rubles and tens of thousands of US dollars”.

With a part of the sum wired from the Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow and another portion transferred from the Russian federal budget, the total sum of the funds comprised between $140,000-150,000, the channel said.

Imedi TV also said the transfers had continued following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that started in late February.

Khoshtaria confirmed the information by saying her father was the successor of Soliko Virsaladze, a famed Georgian scenographer who produced set and costume designs in theatres, including venues based in Russia.

The opposition politician said the funds were royalties for Virsaladze’s work, “accrued and transferred over the past 25 years from all the [productions involving] him [in Russia]”.
