A fresh project funded by the European Union will aim to create an energy regulatory environment for digitalisation in Georgia following its launch by the Georgian National Energy and Water Regulatory Commission, the body said on Thursday.

The GNERC said the fifth Twinning Light Fiche project, funded by the EU in the amount of €250,000, would run for eight months and develop a regulatory framework for promoting “efficient, safe, modern and secure processing of data” and develop a digitalisation strategy and its action plan.

The process of digitalisation, which is one of the most important tasks of the energy sector, contributes to the development of consumer and domestic services, quality improvement, as well as Georgia's approximation to EU standards in many areas", Romeo Mikautadze, the Deputy Minister of Economy, said in comments on the development.

Mikautadze also said the Ministry was working on the development of Georgia's energy policy and on refining the national energy and climate plan.

The digitalisation strategy and action plan will be developed in line with the Association Agreement, signed by Georgia with the EU in 2014, and the Energy Community Treaty.
