Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, on Wednesday said providing support for Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova and countries in the South Caucasus was “more important than ever,” vowing the EU would continue strengthening ties with the partnering states.

Borrell said the EU’s Strategic Compass “clearly stressed” the Union’s intention to boost cooperation in the area of “security and defence” with Eastern Partners.

We have proposed to increase the non-lethal military assistance measures benefitting Georgia and Moldova. It will support logistics, cyber-defence, military medical, engineering and mobility capabilities,” the EU official said.

He also focused on the Russian aggression in Ukraine by saying it had created a “new reality” for the Eastern Partnership.

We are convinced that the regional framework remains valid and is an essential tool to project the EU’s values and interests in the Eastern neighbourhood. It is also a tool that helps to deepen our relations with the Eastern partners to the benefit of citizens, both in the EU and in the Eastern Partnership countries. A safe, peaceful and prosperous Europe is a goal that we share with our Eastern partners,” Borrell concluded.
