“New prospects” on the path of European integration are a “great opportunity” for Georgia and the South Caucasus region, Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili said at a joint briefing with her Armenian counterpart Vahagn Khachaturyan on Monday.
The two presidents made joint statements as a part of an official visit of Khachaturian in capital Tbilisi, with Zourabishvili emphasising the situation in the Russian-occupied territories of Georgia remained “dire,” with a “neglect of sovereignty” and “gross violations of human rights”.
The Presidential Administration quoted Zourabichvili on noting the “future of our region” was closely linked with a peaceful environment, and expressed hope ongoing negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan over conflict resolution would continue successfully.
Her Armenian counterpart highlighted the “great importance” of developing relations between the two states, based on “historical and cultural heritage and identical values”. Khachaturian said the ties were strengthened by “consistent work” and provided a “stronger basis’ for the future.

The visiting official also said the intensity of the high-level meetings “testified” to the fulfilment of bilateral commitments to further expand cooperation between the countries.
Khachaturian is also scheduled to hold meetings with the Prime Minister of Georgia and the Speaker of the Parliament.
In the symbolic part of the visit, he will lay a wreath at the memorial to the heroes fallen in conflicts for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in Tbilisi.
